First Full Day -- Saturday and the Borough Market

We'd heard from a number of people and articles that the Borough Market was fun.  It was.  Lots of small food stands.  Interesting options.  We ate a grilled cheese sandwich and had more emergency coffee rations from Marathon Coffee ("we like to know just exactly how the beans were treated when they were growing up.. we try not to hurt them too much while we roast them.)  Very good coffee and I wouldn't turn down a cup (aside from waiting for the 30 people ahead of us in line to get their orders first).  I've read that Borough Market is considered picturesque enough that it regularly gets used in movies.  Didn't get to (this time we REALLY didn't need lunch time beers) Market Porter, which I understand is a pretty good pub, but might when we go back to Borough this Thursday.

From Borough we went to an art gallery in a Rodeo Drive-like (store wise) area.  They were having a Dale Chihuly exhibit and it was the last day.  He's a glass blower/sculptor.  The show at the gallery was great!  We've seen his art in a number of locales over the years and this was the equivalent of a museum exhibit.  I don't really understand why the gallery was holding it since of the dozens of people who came through while we were there, including some like us who took pictures, it didn't seem like anyone was a buyer.  Oh well.  We were grateful that we'd found out about the exhibit, and that it didn't close till we'd gotten a chance to see it (if it were staying longer,we'd probably go back....)

Wandered from there down more high end shopping streets including Saville Row, which was surprisingly industrial/corporate.  I pictured a bunch of small shops with old windows and lots of wood painted brown.  And, guys with thick glasses and puffy white shirts kneeling down taking measurements of their clients.  Well, maybe that was going on inside.  But, the buildings were mostly in the 3-5 storey range, looking like quite regular office/commercial buildings with glass and aluminum and polished stone facings.

On the way home I bought a replacement (f*** the TSA) razor.  Turns out it shaves closer than the one I'd owned.  I'd like to continue to use it when we return to LA, but I'm going to need to find out how to feed it 110volts when it is expecting 220...

Dinner.  Brewdog!  OK, beer and dinner.  Lots of great beers.  They're a Scottish brewery.  We talked to a Danish guy while we were standing at the bar and, after I'd observed that I noticed rye in their Black Ale I'd established some credibility so we talked beers some.  The place was mobbed.  Maxine figured that there *might* have been 1 or 2 people our age at in the room, but we were still treated fine.  She ended up playing the "phone a friend" (Who Wants to Be A Millionaire board game) when they had a movie question.  Since Brewdog was willing to sell us taster sized beers, we tried 8 different ones, including Hops Kill Nazi's (yes, that was the name).  We also bought a small taste of Tactical Nuclear Penguin which is a 64 proof beer (not a typo).  Tasted pretty good.  We also wanted to try Sink The Bismark, but they were out (Brewdog has a rivalry going with a German brewery...)  Good burger, good pizza, VERY good beers.  And home on our unlimited use bus & train passes (see last blog...)
